At least 52 Iraqis killed in Fallujah

Fighting in the Iraqi city of Fallujah has killed at least 52 civilians till Wednesday morning, including 25 killed in a house destroyed in an attack, Qatar-based al-Jazeera TV channel reported.

Fighting in the Iraqi city of Fallujah has killed at least 52 civilians till Wednesday morning, including 25 killed in a house destroyed in an attack, Qatar-based al-Jazeera TV channel reported.

Witnesses said the house was hit by rockets fired by a US gunship and completely destroyed on Tuesday night. Four families had been sheltering in the house and some victims were still buriedin the debris.

US marines backed by tanks, armoured vehicles, gunships and warplanes were faced with fierce resistance by veiled militants andresidents who fought them as they tried to enter the city to crackdown insurgency.

The veiled militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms spread in the city and the local people showed readinessto fight, saying they are "fighting for their families," according to the channel.

The city suffered from acute shortage in medicine and because ofthe fierce battle, wounded people cannot reach the field hospital erected temporarily by local doctors in the city center. Some wounded were bleeding to death, the channel quoted medical sources as saying.

Fallujah People renewed their appeal for UN chief Kofi Annan andhead of the Arab League (AL) Umro Musa Wednesday to step in and end the US marines siege on their city.

The appeal signed by local municipality also called on all the international organizations and societies to intervene to stop the US action to kill civilians and besiege the city, TV channel said.

US Marines launched a massive military action on Monday in the restive city of Fallujah after four American security contractors were killed and their bodies were mutilated brutally by crowd last week.
