12 US Marines killed in Iraqi attack: Pentagon

As many as 12 US Marines were killed in Iraq Tuesday when their position was attacked near the governor's palace in the city of Ramadi, the Pentagon said.

As many as 12 US Marines were killed in Iraq Tuesday when their position was attacked near the governor's palace in the city of Ramadi, the Pentagon said.

Local television reports quoted a senior US defense official said "a significant number" of Marines were killed, and initial reports indicated it might be as many as a dozen.

The reports said the attack in Ramadi, about 110 kilometers west of Baghdad, appeared to have been carried out by supporters of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, rather than those of Shiite Muslim cleric Moqtada Sadr.

Ramadi is in the so-called "Sunni Triangle," where Saddam had strong support.

The new attack came as US Marines continued strikes in the cityof Falluja after the killings and mutilations of four American civilians there last week.

Besides the death toll in Ramadi, at least 19 American Marines and soldiers have been killed since Sunday in a new round of insurgency by supporters of Sadr. The violence has spread to at least four cities.
