Spanish PM-elect to be sworn in by mid-April

Spain's Prime Minister-elect Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero will be sworn in on April 15 or 16.

Spain's Prime Minister-elect Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero will be sworn in on April 15 or 16.

He will take an oath in front of King Juan Carlos I one day after the inauguration, the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) said Monday.

In Spain, the chief of government is not elected directly, but is proposed by the king and must be approved by the congress by anabsolute majority.

The PSOE, which won the general elections on March 14, named Zapatero as its candidate for prime minister.

The new prime minister will announce his cabinet lineup one dayafter the oath.

The PSOE voiced confidence that Zapatero would gain the needed majority in the congress.

The Spanish king will soon hold consultations on the matter with representatives of the political parties which have won seatsin the congress.

The PSOE will also nominate former Vice President of the European Commission Manuel Marin as the president of the congress.
