Polish Prime Minister Leszek Miller announced on Friday that he will resign on May 2, one day after his country joins the European Union.

Polish Prime Minister Leszek Miller announced on Friday that he will resign on May 2, one day after his country joins the European Union.

Leszek Miller, an eletrician-turned prime minister, was born on3 July 1946 and joined the Polish United Workers Party (PZPR) in 1969.

In 1977, he graduated from Higher School of Political Sciences.Between 1977 and 1982 he worked in the PZPR Central Committee in Skierniewice.

Miller became the PZPR secretary in 1988 and a member of the PZPR Political Bureau a year later.

Miller was the labor minister in the Waldemar Pawlak governmentbetween 1993 and 1996 and the minister of internal affairs in the governments of Jozef Oleksy and Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz.

He became the president of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) in December 1999 and has been the prime minister of Poland since September 2001. ()
