US Secretary of State Colin Powell acknowledged on Thursday that the United States had some disagreements with new Spanish Prime Minister Luis Rodriguez Zapatero on the Iraq issue.

"Although we have some disagreements with Mr. Zapatero on Iraq, and we will work our way through that, one thing that there is no disagreement on is that the United States and Spain will be united in this fight against terrorism," Powell said at a hearing at the Senate Appropriations Committee.

"I am confident that we will find ways to cooperate in this battle against terrorism," Powell said.

Powell said he was just back from Madrid where he attended "a very moving memorial service" for the victims of the March 11 bombing attacks.

Zapatero has drawn a clear line from his predecessor Jose Maria Aznar by pledging to bring home the 1,300 Spanish troops stationed in Iraq after June 30 if there is no mandate from the United Nations.

Some European newspapers reported that Zapatero kept Powell waiting for some time before finally agreeing to see him for just 15 minutes. However, US officials have denied that Powell was snubbed and claimed that the meeting was cut short because the memorial service lasted longer than expected.
