UN: China ahead of Millennium Development Goal for education
China is ahead of target in ensuring that all children will be enrolled in primary schools by 2015, according to a report issued in Beijing Thursday by the United Nations Country Team in China.
China is ahead of target in ensuring that all children will be enrolled in primary schools by 2015, according to a report issued in Beijing Thursday by the United Nations Country Team in China.
The report, entitled "Millennium Development Goals, China's Progress", said that the net primary school enrollment rate raised from 96.3 percent in 1990 to 98.6 percent in 2002 and the gross enrollment rate for junior secondary schools, from 66.7 percent to 90 percent in the same period.
However, it said, statistics do not show whether children completed their primary education, but it is clear that completion ratios fell significantly below enrollment ratios, particularly inpoor rural areas.
Funding for primary education in poor areas is a particular problem and the education quality varies widely both within cities and between urban and rural China, it said.
The report suggested China establish a system to track completion of primary and secondary education, adopt different schooling methods from the mainstream educational system and provide subsidies to poor rural families.
It also suggested China upgrade the quality of rural and migrant education and try to meet the educational needs of children aged under six years.
