Russia said on Monday that the assassination of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, the founder and spiritual leader of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), could result in another outbreak of violence and thwart attempts to restart Palestinian-Israeli negotiations.

"Moscow is deeply concerned about the situation. It could result in another outbreak of violence, which may thwart attempts of the international mediating quartet and key regional parties to restart Palestinian-Israeli negotiations," said the Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko.

He urged Israelis and Palestinians to show "self-control and responsibility," and not to do "anything that may escalate the regional tension."

"We are confident that only the resumed implementation of the settlement roadmap and the combined security efforts of Israel andthe Palestinian National Administration can stop terrorism and create conditions for a lasting settlement on the basis of peaceful co-existence between the states of Israel and Palestine within safe and recognized borders," Yakovenko said.

Yassin and his two body guards were killed by missiles fired by Israeli helicopters early on Monday as they left a mosque in Gaza City.
