Islamic Jihad: Israeli assassination of Yassin opens door to war

The Islamic Jihad (Holy War) movement said on Monday that Israel's killing of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, founder and spiritual leader of Hamas, would open the door to a new war.

The Islamic Jihad (Holy War) movement said on Monday that Israel's killing of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, founder and spiritual leader of Hamas, would open the door to a new war.

"Israel has targeted a great man and leader and his killing represents a great loss for all Arabs and Muslims," Khaled Al-Batsh, a spokesman for the Islamic Jihad, told reporters.

"This horrible crime creates new facts in the Palestinian arena and opens the door wide for a new war," he said.

Al-Batsh added that the assassination of Yassin was in the core of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plans to target Palestinian militant factions.

"Sharon's plan adopts the language of killings and destruction against Arabs while he uses a diplomatic language with the West," he said.

The Islamic Jihad spokesman asserted that the assassination of Hamas's founder and spiritual leader would not weaken Hamas, but will strengthen Palestinians and increase their will of resistance.

Al-Batch also called on Palestinians to adopt the "ultimate choice" of resistance, saying it was the only factor that pushed Sharon to consider a military pullout from the Gaza Strip.

Israeli Apache helicopters fired three missiles at Yassin beforedawn Monday as he was leaving a mosque near his house in Gaza City,Palestinian medical sources and witnesses said.
