Database on ancient China's academy culture established in central China

An online database on China's ancient academy culture has just been established by Hunan University in central China to allow easy access to information on China's ancient higher education institutions.

"General pictures, history and celebrities of over 7,000 traditional Chinese academies located in China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the United States, Italy and Southeast Asia are exhibited in the database," said Deng Hongbo, a professor with Hunan University.

"Through the database, you may also see some source materials and research documents collected by those academies, as well as pictures of related cultural relics and video materials," said Deng.

According to Deng, nearly 20,000 items are stored in the database.

China's ancient academies were the cultural and educational center for classical learning, where various kinds of academic activities on Confucian classics including book collection, reading, teaching, rhetoric, writing, proofreading and book engraving had been carried out for over 1,000 years from the Tang (618-907) to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

"The establishment of the database will provide a research platform for experts in traditional academy culture research, the history of education, Confucian study and the cultural history of China," said Zhu Hanming, president of Yuelu Academy of Hunan University.

"And it will provide a new way for people to know Chinese traditional culture and civilization," said Zhu.

Established in 976, the Yuelu Academy is the oldest higher educational institution and one of the four most famous academies of China. It was converted into a school of higher learning in 1903 and became part of Hunan University in 1926.
