Bush renews defense of Iraq war in weekly radio address

US President George W. Bush renewed on Saturday his defense of the Iraq war on its one-year anniversary, insisting the war "was good for the Iraqi people, good for America, and good for the world."

US President George W. Bush renewed on Saturday his defense of the Iraq war on its one-year anniversary, insisting the war "was good for the Iraqi people, good for America, and good for the world."

In his weekly radio address, Bush said the fall of former Iraqileader Saddam Hussein had removed a source of instability in the Middle East.

Iraq was now an example to the region after the ouster of Saddam Hussein, he said.

The address was part of a week-long effort to rally support forthe war among US voters and allies.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the president had meetings with the Dutch and Irish prime ministers, two strong allies on the Iraq war,and he made a speech on Thursday to thousands of US troops who had returned from Iraq, followed by another speech at the White House on Friday.

Bush urged US allies to stand firm in the battle. "Helping Iraqe merge as a free nation is a global responsibility," he said.

"The terrorists hate and target a free Iraq. They also hate andtarget every country that stands for democracy, and tolerance, and freedom in the world," he added.

Spain's prime minister-elect Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said last week that he would pull the country's troops out of Iraq, and Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski said his country was misled about Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction.

Bush did not mention Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction,which he used to justify the war. Bush ordered the invasion of Iraq on March 20, on grounds that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction and had links with al Qaeda, but has failed to find the weapons to date.

Senator John Kerry, the likely Democratic presidential nominee to challenge Bush in the Nov. 2 election, has accused Bush of deceiving voters over Iraq's weapons and the war's cost. "Simply put, this president didn't tell the truth about the war," he said. ��
