The situation calmed down in the Serbian province of Kosovo with the arrival of NATO reinforcements, the Beta news agency reported Saturday.

It was quiet on Saturday and there were no major outbreaks of violence.

Checkpoints on the roads leading in and out of the provincial capital Pristina were manned by NATO forces.

A total of 280 NATO soldiers, including those sent by the United States and Britain, have arrived in the province to enforce the 17,500 strong NATO-led Multinational Peacekeeping Force in Kosovo.

More troops, including those from Germany and France, are expected to come in the next few days.

The UN-Interim Administration in Kosovo (UNMIK) refreshed the death toll in the clashes from the earlier 31 to 28, adding that at least 600 people were injured in the clashes.

The UN police in Kosovo said 110 houses of local Serbs were burned down, and 16 Orthodox churches and monasteries have been destroyed in the clashes.

About 900 Kosovo Serbs fled their homes, seeking protection from NATO-led peacekeepers.

Tens of thousands of people on Friday took to the streets across Serbia, calling for an end to violence against Kosovo Serbs.
