US Secretary of State Colin Powell arrived in Baghdad on an unannounced visit Friday, just one day before the anniversary of the US-led invasion on Iraq.

Powell, who made his first trip to Iraq in September last year, was due to meet with US overseer in Iraq Paul Bremer and members ofthe US-appointed governing council during his surprising visit.

Speaking to a group of audience in Baghdad after his arrival, Powell praised the US-led coalition forces.

"You and your buddies have removed a horrible dictatorial regime ... You should be proud of that," he said.

The secretary of state arrived in Iraq from neighboring Kuwait, where he held talks with officials on the first leg of a Gulf tour which would also take him to Saudi Arabia.

Before his arrival at the region, Powell had concluded a trip toAfghanistan, India and Pakistan.

Powell's surprising visit came on the heels of a spate of fresh attacks in Iraq, which left dozens of people dead in the past several days.
