Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga has abolished 13 non-cabinet ministries earlier taken over by her with immediate effect in order to save public funds, the official Daily News said on Friday.

The Presidential Secretariat said in a special gazette notification the president has also amalgamated two non-cabinet ministries to two other cabinet ministries.

Following the dissolution of parliament on Feb. 7, President Kumaratunga removed all the non-cabinet ministers and deputy ministers in a bid to restructure all the ministries.

The objective of removing those ministers was to minimize the number of ministries and to reduce and save administration and maintenance costs, the Presidential Secretariat stated.

Accordingly, the number of non-cabinet ministries has now been reduced from 24 to 13.
