The 24th Paris Book Fair was inaugurated Thursday by French President Jacques Chirac, with China as a special guest.
Some 40 Chinese-language authors -- from Chinese mainland, HongKong,
Taiwan
and overseas -- have been invited to the annual exhibition, which is opening from March 19 to 24 to highlight Chinese literature.
"This is the first time that Chinese people are leaving their country to attend this type of event in Europe," said the head of the French Publishers' Association SNE, Serge Eyrolles.
The book fair attracts each year some 200,000 visitors and about 1,150 publishers.
French Culture Minister Jean-Jacques Aillagon and Chinese Ambassador to
France
Zhao Jinjun were also present at the inauguration.
