Japanese PM meets Chinese vice-foreign minister

Visiting Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo on Monday indirectly called on the Japanese government to properly handle political issues between the two countries so as to further promote Sino-Japanese relations.

Dai, also an envoy for Chinese government, made the statement at a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. During the meeting, Dai handed a letter to Koizumi on behalf of Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Some positive change in the field of understanding on China's development has been noticed recently in Japan, Dai said, adding that the change is largely affected by the prime minister's cognizance that China's development is not a threat but an opportunity to Japan.

Dai urged Japan to push forward Sino-Japanese relations with a strategic goal for friendship between the two sides in 21st century.

He also briefed with current situation and China's stand on theissue of Taiwan, saying that China welcomes the Japanese government's long lasting support for "One China" policy and its attitude on the issue at the end of last year.

Dai hopes Japan to continue insistence to the "One China" policy and support the peaceful reunification of China.

Koizumi said exchanges in various aspects between the two countries are very active, with bilateral trade growing dramatically, which has proved the view that the development of China is not a threat but an opportunity to Japan.

The Japanese government will keep abiding by its friendly policy toward China and maintain the momentum of bilateral friendship and cooperation, he said, while promising to make personnel efforts to that end.

The premier appreciated China's efforts to seek a peaceful solution on the Taiwan issue. He also extended gratitude for China's great endeavor during the second round of six-party talks held late February in Beijing over the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsular.

Early Monday, Dai also met with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda, leader of the New Komeito party Takenori Kanzaki and main opposition Democratic Party President Naoto Kan. They had frank and in-depth talks over mutual concerns, including bilateral relations and the Taiwan issue.
