Mr. Osama al-Baz, Egypt's first Vice Foreign Minister and Political Advisor to President Hosni Mubarak, on Sunday reiterated Egypt's adherence to the "One China" policy and support for China's peaceful reunification, the news office of Chinese embassy in Egypt said. Baz made the remarks when meeting with Chinese ambassador to Egypt Wu Sike.

He said that there is but one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China in terms of history, ethnic group, culture and legal principle. The attempts by the Taiwan authorities to split the island from China, whether through "referendum" or other forms, will never succeed and will never change the "One China" fact. The "peaceful reunification; one country, two systems" is the best way for China to finally solve the Taiwan issue, Baz said, and the successful implementation of "one country, two systems" in Hong Kong and Macao has set a good example for the unification of the two sides across the Taiwan Strait.

Having established diplomatic relations with China in 1956, Egypt is the first Arab and African country to acknowledge the "One China" principle, Baz stressed. It's a consistent policy for Egypt to stick to the "One China" principle and support China's peaceful reunification, a policy that will be continuously pursued.

Ambassador Wu Sike briefed Baz the latest developments of the situation across the Taiwan Straits. He exposed the splittist nature of the Taiwan authorities to push "referendum" on the pretext of "democracy" and pointed out that the Chinese government opposes any splittist activity in any form and on any pretext. Wu also reviewed together with Baz the provisions concerning Taiwan's return to China in the 1943 Cairo Declaration, and expressed appreciation and thanks for the Egyptian government's consistent stand on the "One China" principle.
