French President Chirac reiterates 'One China' stance
French President Jacques Chirac met Saturday in the Elysee Palace with Dai Bingguo, special envoy of the Chinese government and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister. The two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations and international issues of common concern in a friendly atmosphere, and Dai passed on President Hu Jintao's letter to Chirac.
French President Jacques Chirac met Saturday in the Elysee Palace with Dai Bingguo, special envoy of the Chinese government and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister. The two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations and international issues of common concern in a friendly atmosphere, and Dai passed on President Hu Jintao's letter to Chirac.
The two parties agreed that President Hu's France visit early this year is a success and is of great significance for pushing forward the overall strategic partnership between the two countries. The two sides are willing to continue visits between high-ranking officials and push China-France ties to a new height.
President Chirac reiterated the France's adherence to the "One China" policy and opposition to any one-sided action, including the "referendum", that changes the status quo, causes tension in the Taiwan Straits and leads to Taiwan independence.
Dai Bingguo expressed his appreciation and thanks for the French stance. He briefed Chirac the latest developments of the Taiwan Straits situation and repeated China's principles on the Taiwan issue.
