HK students to obtain first-hand experience in tourism study visits

To keep students abreast of the latest development of Hong Kong's tourism industry, Hong Kong's Curriculum Development Institute of the Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB) for the first time co-organized with tourism related organizations a series of study visits in March and April.

The study visits aim to give Secondary Four and Secondary Five students taking the "Travel and Tourism" subject, as well as their teachers, an opportunity to enhance their knowledge about the actual operation of the tourism industry beyond the classroom.

According to a government press release Sunday, the first study visit, held on the International Tourist Guide Day (March 10), was jointly organized by EMB, the Star Cruises and the Hong Kong Association of Registered Tour Coordinators. Over 200 students and teachers from about 40 secondary schools went on board the cruise ship to see for themselves the operation of the cruise industry.

The students and teachers were shown and briefed on the facilities aboard by professional tourist guides. A seminar was also arranged for them to learn more about the duties and appropriate manner of a tourist guide, as well as the role of the cruise industry in the development of the tourism industry, and its rapid development in Asia and the world.

Participating students will put into practice what they have learnt from the visit by acting as tourist guides in their schools.They will also produce a CD-ROM in multi-media format for participation in the programs.

Hong Kong's tourism was recovered well remarkably last year when the number of visitors reached 15.5 million.
