At least 50 passengers, including seven Japanese people, have been injured when a jam-packed bus overturned in central Nepal, Radio Nepal reported Sunday.
The speeding bus overloaded with more than 200 passengers hit the hillside Saturday night at Bhumlutar village of Kavre district, some 70 km east of Kathmandu, the state-run radio quoted a local police officer as saying.
"At least 44 injured have returned home after treatment, while six others have been admitted to Dhulikhel Hospital," the officer said on condition of anonymity.
A mound on the roadside stopped the bus from falling off a cliff, he said, adding that the police are searching for the driver who was at large after the mishap.
The bus enroute to the capital was heavily overloaded as vehicles stayed off the road Friday due to the rumor of a general strike called by the anti-government guerrillas.
