Chinese midfielder Li Guoxu has been confirmed on Friday to join Boca Juniors as his club Chongqing Lifan has reached an agreement with the Argentine club.
The 30-year-old Li, who can play both forward and left midfield, told Xinhua that he is leaving for Argentina next week and will play for Boca Juniors until the end of the local league season on June 30.
A Lifan club official said that Chongqing will get a 27-year-old striker from Boca in return.
Li made trials in Boca in February and was soon told he could join the side.
Although Chongqing Lifan had received Boca invitations for Li, as the team will play in the inaugural Chinese Premier League in May, it has to think twice as they are keen on staying in the top flight this season.
Chongqing finally gave Li the green light after they signed midfielder Zhu Guanghui and veteran Liu Yue is also fit to play in Li's position.
Li seemed optimistic to take the challenge in Boca. "I am confident for myself," he said.
More and more European soccer clubs have shown interests in recruiting Chinese players. The most recent Chinese joining a European club is Dong Fangzhuo, who was signed by English champions Manchester United last year. But he was immediately loaned to Belgian side Antwerp because the non-capped player could not obtain a work permit in England.
Manchester City defender Sun Jihai is the only active Chinese player in Europe. He was bought by City manager Kevin Keegan in 2001.
