Blair vows to continue fight against terrorism

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Saturday that Thursday's Madrid bombings showed the fight against terrorism "is far from over" and pledged to do everything necessary to defeat "the new menace of our time."

"This is a battle that is far from over. But like previous battles vital to the progress of humankind, this one too will be won," Blair told an audience at the ruling Labor Party's spring conference in Manchester, northwest England.

"We will match their determination with our own. We will be as resolute as they are fanatical, as strong in the defense of good as they are hell-bent on doing evil."

"Terrorism is the new menace of our time... We must be preparedfor them to strike whenever and however they can... But let the message go out,... we will not show fear, we will do what is necessary to defend our way of life, and to defeat this terrorism," he said.

The prime minister said: "Life is a perpetual struggle... In aninsecure and uncertain world, our Britain is well placed not just to survive but to thrive."

Spanish regional authorities said Saturday that the death toll from this week's deadly bomb attacks in Madrid has risen to 200. Nearly 1,500 people were wounded in the attacks. Of those, more than 280 remain in hospital, some in critical condition.
