Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Friday appointed Spyros Capralos as the new General Secretary of Cultural Ministry for the Olympic Games, replacing Costas Kartalis who resigned after New Democracy came into power following the Mar. 7 general elections.

Capralos has been the Executive Director of the Athens 2004 Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (ATHOC) since June 2000.

"It is a great honor for me that the Prime Minister appointed me as General Secretary for the Olympic Games during this critical phase of Olympic preparations. I will continue to do my best from my new position for the success of this great national cause," Capralos said.

ATHOC President Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki welcomed the appointment immediately.

"I wish to point out that the prime minister's choice is also an honor for the Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games," she said in a statement.

"His experience in sports and his excellent knowledge of issues pertaining to Olympic preparations - as ATHENS 2004 Executive Director - are a guarantee for the continuation of our excellent cooperation," she added.
