Chinese boxers look to make breakthrough in Athens Olympics

Chinese boxers aim at a breakthrough in the Athens Olympic Games by winning a medal of any color, the Chinese national boxing team's head coach Li Qingsheng said in Chengdu, southwest China on Mar. 11.

Li said China is likely to win a medal from lighter categories and Zou Shiming, silver medal winner at last year's world championships, is the biggest medal hopeful in Athens.

"Zou and Lei Yuming (from 81kg class) won the qualification last year and that was a big boost to our morale," Li said.

"Zou is very fast and powerful. He is our medal hope in Athens," Li said.

More Chinese boxers are expected to qualify for the Olympics inthe remaining two qualifying tournaments.

Only three Chinese competed in the Sydney Olympic boxing tournament four years ago.

China's best Olympic performance in the sport was Jiang Tao's fifth place in the 91kg category in the 1996 Games in Atlanta.
