Fijian president reiterates one-China policy

Fijian President Josefa Iloilo said on Thursday that his country will adhere to the one-China policy and not to have any official contact with Taiwan.

Fijian President Josefa Iloilo said on Thursday that his country will adhere to the one-China policy and not to have any official contact with Taiwan.

He made the remarks when receiving credentials of Chinese new ambassador to Fiji Cai Jinbiao in Suva, capital of the South Pacific island state.

Reports reaching here quoted Iloilo as telling Cai that Fiji and China have enjoyed a long-term friendly relationship ever since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1975.

The two countries have witnessed frequent exchanges of high-level visits and fruitful cooperation in the political, economic and sports areas for the recent years, the president said.

Iloilo also thanked the Chinese government for the assistance provided over the many years for the benefit of Fiji's social and economic development.

Cai arrived in Suva on March 5.
