The No. 2 generating unit of the second-phase project of Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, located in Haiyan County in east China's Zhejiang Province, began trial operation early Thursday.
The No. 2 generating unit with an installed capacity of 600,000kw will go into commercial operation in June, and it is expected to help alleviate power shortage in east China, said Li Yongjiang, general manager of the plant.
The No. 1 generating unit with the same capacity has produced over 9 billion kwh of electricity since it went into commercial operation on April 4, 2002.
Another two generating units with each having 600,000 kw of capacity are still to be constructed.
Upon the completion of the four units, the second-phase project of Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant will be able to provide 16 billion kwh of electricity per year to the power grid in east China.
There are three nuclear power bases in China's mainland, at Qinshan in east China's Zhejiang Province, Daya Bay in south China's Guangdong Province and Tianwan in east China's Jiangsu Province.
