Putin signs law on international cooperation for fighting terrorism

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law, which ratifies an agreement to establish a regional anti-terrorism agency within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the presidential press service said Sunday.

Russian State Duma, the lower house of parliament, approved theagreement on Feb. 18.

The agreement, which was signed by SCO members -- Russia, China,Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan -- in June 2002 at the St. Petersburg summit, aims to facilitate cooperation between the six member states in their fight against the terrorism,separatism and extremism.

According to the SCO Charter, the regional anti-terrorism agency is a standing body with its headquarters in Uzbekistan's capital of Tashkent.
