China invests US$566m in grain production bases

The Chinese government has invested 4.7 billion yuan (US$566 million) in building 41 large grain production bases capable of providing one third of the country's total output.

The Chinese government has invested 4.7 billion yuan (US$566 million) in building 41 large grain production bases capable of providing one third of the country's total output.

The State Development and Reform Commission (SDRC) has concluded that large bases producing high-quality cereals, including wheat, rice, soybeans and corns, was the fastest and most effective way to increase the grain output, said an SDRC official.

SDRC figures showed that 41 production bases covered only one fifth of the national crop-growing areas, but accounted for one third of the production.

The production bases played a significant role in maintaining stable grain output when the overall grain production had decreased sharply in recent years, said the official.

The central government had allocated 2.3 billion yuan (US$277 million) for the project, while the other 2.4 billion yuan (US$289 million) came from local governments, he said.

With the investment, China had constructed 260,000 hectares of breeding base for good-quality seeds, 300,000 square meters of seeds storehouses and irrigation stations and 6,000 kilometers of ditches, which enabled 41 bases to produce grain efficiently.

In recent years, the SDRC has invested heavily in grain sector, an the annual investment of 2 billion yuan (US$240 million) in 1998 and 1999 and 3 billion yuan (US$360 million) per year since 2000.
