The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has reaffirmed its adherence to the one-China principle, saying that the regional grouping is closely watching the situation across the Taiwan Strait.
The statement, announced at ASEAN's informal foreign ministerial meeting in Vietname's Ha Long Bay on March 3-4, marked the first time that ASEAN has stated its common stance on the Taiwan issue, a move reflecting all ASEAN members' resolute adherence to the one-China policy.
"We emphasized the need to avoid any actions that may further exacerbate the situation, namely the referendum," said Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajudathe of Indonesia, which holds the rotating chairmanship of the ASEAN Standing Committee.
"ASEAN countries have strong interest in the maintenance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait ... In this regard, ASEAN countries reaffirm their adherence to the one-China policy," he said.
