NATO considers taking over command of multinational force from Poland

General Secretary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said Thursday that NATO will provide support for the Polish army in Iraq and for the Iraqi army maintaining social order commanded by Poland.

Hoop Scheffer started his first visit to Poland since his assuming the office of The NATO General Secretary. He will mainly discuss the issue of taking over the commanding power of the multinational force from Poland, and the future development of NATO.

Speaking at a press conference, Hoop Scheffer said that NATO can take part in the maintaining of stability of Iraq, but only under the Iraqi sovereign government and UN Security council's authorization, can NATO consider "when and how to begin appearing in Iraq".

In relation to the future development of NATO, Hoop Scheffer stressed NATO should open to new members as usual, and the European Union must develop its own security and defense policy, but neither compete with NATO, nor against the United States.
