Libya completes first phase of chemical weapons destruction

Over 3,300 aerial bombs designed to carry mortal chemicals have been destroyed in Libya between Feb.27 and March 3, ending the first phase of chemical weapons destruction in the country.

Over 3,300 aerial bombs designed to carry mortal chemicals have been destroyed in Libya between Feb.27 and March 3, ending the first phase of chemical weapons destruction in the country.

This was announced by The Hague-based the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) on Thursday.

"The bombs, specifically designed to disperse chemical warfare agent, have been individually inventoried, then irreversibly destroyed under stringent international verification at the destruction site throughout the period of the destruction campaign," said the OPCW in a statement.

The OPCW said its inspectors had verified through "on-site, continuous monitoring the complete destruction of the unfilled aerial bombs."

"Bulldozers were used to crush the bomb casings," said the OPCW.

An OPCW press official said in a telephone interview that a senior-level Libyan government delegation are scheduled to arrive at The Hague Thursday evening and they will submit Libya's complete declaration of all chemical weapons to OPCW Director-General Rogelio Pfirter Friday.

The complete declaration will detail the contents of the entireLibyan chemical weapons arsenal, any chemical weapons production capacity, any relevant industrial activities, as well as a plan for the destruction of all chemical weapons and their production capacity, said the official.

On Feb.20, the Libyan authorities submitted to the OPCW a partial declaration of their chemical weapons stockpiles.

According to the Chemical Weapons Convention, all state partiesto the Convention must destroy all declared chemical weapons by April 29, 2007. A one-time five-year extension can be granted uponrequest by the Conference of the States Parties.
