China will help Afghanistan to rebuild a major irrigation project near Kabul under a contract signed between the Afghan transitional government and the Chinese government Wednesday in Kabul.

The reconstruction contract was signed by Chinese ambassador to Afghanistan, Sun Yuxi and Afghan Irrigation, Water Resources and Environment Minister Mohammad Yusuf Nooristani at a ceremony held in the Chinese Embassy.

In his speech delivered at the event, Sun Yuxi expressed his hope that after rehabilitation, the irrigation project which originally completed in the mid-70s by Chinese workers, continues to serve as a token of friendship between the Chinese and Afghan people.

The Chinese-initiated project is located in Parwan Province, some 50 kms north of Kabul. After the construction of the project,24,800 hectares of lands have been benefited. However, the 23 years devastating war has rendered the project almost useless.

Nooristani thanked the Chinese government for its help in rebuilding the giant project in the north of Kabul, and he hoped that the work would further promote the long-lasting relations between the two countries. Sun Jianxiong, vice-president of Xinguang Intenational Group, a major construction company in SouthChina's Guangdong Province, pledged that the construction schedule will be met with high-quality work.

The Afghan transitional government has made the rehabilitation of the irrigation project a priority in its efforts to rebuild thewar-ravaged country.

The first phase of the project will cost 10 million US dollars. The reconstruction work will be completed in 24 months after it starts late this month.
