Haitian rebel leader Guy Philippe said Tuesday that he would have talks with the country's interim president on the disarmament of his forces.

"We will soon have discussions with the interim president (Boniface Alexandre) to lay down our arms," said the rebel leader, who led an insurgence to topple former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

He also asked the government to ensure stability and security in the Caribbean nation and urged Aristide's supporters to stop hostile actions in the capital of Port-au-Prince, reports reaching here said.

Philippe made the remarks in response to a US call for Haitian rebels to lay down their arms and go home.

"All illegal and armed groups should lay down their arms," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said at a news briefing."The rebels need to disband and go back to their homes," he added.

More US Marines entered the violence-torn Haitian capital Tuesday. About 25 Marines arrived at the chaotic city in Humvees equipped with TOW surface-to-surface missiles, witnesses said.

The heavily armed troops constitute an advance contingent of a multinational force and they currently control the Presidential Palace, the Toussaint Louverture international airport and other key places.

Philippe, who proclaimed himself the new military chief of the country, has said he wanted to reconstitute the army that ousted Aristide in 1991 and that Aristide disbanded in 1995.
