An American who teaches in an English school in Phnom Penh appeared in court Monday and was charged with having sex with underage girls.

Charles Landis, a 38-year-old from Hawaii state, was arrested by police last Thursday after complaints were received from several girls and was accused of having sex with at least three young girls at his rented home since 2001.

The Phnom Penh court decided to detain Landis for up to six months pending an investigation and trial. Landis will face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Landis is the fourth American to be charged with sex crimes in Cambodia. Less than two weeks ago, Cambodian authorities expatriated the third US citizen to face charges in his home country for allegedly having sex with young boys in Phnom Penh.
