The Chinese government will further rectify land development to protect arable land and farmers' interests.

Zeng Peiyan, Chinese Vice-Premier and member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, laid out major tasks in a meeting Thursday as follows:

-- resolutely abolishing development zones that were established against existing regulations.

-- implementing the arable land protection system to the strictest extent.

-- attaching great importance to helping unemployed farmers whohave lost land, ensuring that farmers are fully compensated for land that is expropriated for other purposes as quickly as possible.

-- strengthening the crackdown on transgressions in granting land use rights, ensuring both those directly responsible for suchcases and their leaders are punished.

-- establishing a mechanism to strengthen land management in the long term.

Zeng said although some progress had been made, the task of reining in arbitrary land development was tough.

He said rectification of the land development order was significant in curbing haphazard investment, duplicated construction, and maintaining steady development of the national economy.

Eager to invigorate local economies, some local governments used to grant land use rights at very low prices to attract investment, frequently encroaching on arable land and farmers' interests.
