Thailand declares one more suspected bird flu patient

The Health Ministry of Thailand said Thursday that a patient from Surin province, 480 kilometers from Bangkok, had added to the list of suspected bird flu patients, the Thai News Agency reported.

The Health Ministry of Thailand said Thursday that a patient from Surin province, 480 kilometers from Bangkok, had added to the list of suspected bird flu patients, the Thai News Agency reported.

Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health Ministry, Thawat Suntrajarn said the 29-year old patient is a worker in a chicken factory and has fallen in illness since Jan. 31.

Doctor has detected that the patient could had been infected by flu virus. His blood sample had been sent to Bangkok to test, Thawat said.

With the latest patient, the number of suspected human infections has risen to 20, Thawat said, while the confirmed human infection cases stood at nine. All of the nine confirmed patients were detected in January.

According to the Thai government, the Kingdom began to be affected by the bird flu on Jan. 23, then it declared 40 provinces of the nation's 76 provinces as bird flu control zones successively.

After more than 35 million poultry was slaughtered, the spread of the fatal virus has been controlled, but 15 persons, of whom seven are confirmed infections and eight suspected cases, have died so far.
