The United States will stop andreturn Haitian boat people to their country, White House spokesmanScott McClellan said at a news briefing on Tuesday.
"We have a plan in place to stop any boats. And our position isvery clear that they will be returned to their country from which they departed, absent any specific protection concerns. That has been our policy and that remains our policy," McClellan said.
The US continues carefully to monitor the situation in Haiti, "but we have not seen any indication to indicate a surge in a migration at this point," McClellan said.
McClellan said the US remains actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to bring about a "peaceful, negotiated, constitutional anddemocratic" solution to the situation in Haiti.
Embattled Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide Tuesday called for international help, warning that a rebel uprising couldlead to thousands of deaths and a wave of boat people. The opposition has rejected a US-backed international peace plan and demanded Aristide's resignation.
