China's growing importance, Thai financial magnate

As a financial magnate of Thailand the huge Chinese market and limitless business opportunities direct the attention of Mr. Banthoon Lamsam, president and CEO of Kasikornbank, to the rising China. Having learned the long friendly history between China and Thailand the question - "What's the motive force for the economic prosperity of China and Thailand?" sank Mr. Banthoon Lamsam into deep thought again.

It was for this reason that a workshop on the topic - "Culture: Prime Motivation for the Economic Prosperity of China and Thailand" was hosted on Feb. 20 in Bangkok by Kasikornbank - one of the three big commercial banks in Thailand. The workshop was aiming at further strengthening mutual understanding between the two peoples and reinforcing economic and trade cooperation of the two countries.

"To fully understand every aspect of China including its history, politics, economy and culture", according to Mr. Banthoon Lamsam, is necessary for all Asian countries. Mr. Banthoon Lamsam has been in charge of Kasikornbank for more than ten years. In recent years, he has paid frequent visits to China and conducted investigations on financial investment markets in various localities of China. Branches and offices of Kasikornbank have been set up in places like Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing and Kunming.

The banker reminds Thai entrepreneurs that to do business with China one needs first to understand Chinese Rules of Ritual spirit, the cultural content of relations between the people and Chinese history. In order to understand the history, culture, politics and economy of a nation the key is to understand its language. Therefore Chinese language is the basis for understanding China.

"The Thai social community should take a correct attitude towards the research of Chinese language and Chinese culture. Only by doing so can the economic and trade cooperation between the two countries get a proper development." Mr. Banthoon Lamsam, who knows by heart that "cultural influence exists everywhere", places hope on Thai business circle to study Chinese culture in depth and deepen the understanding of China in order to bring about the development of friendship and cooperation between China and Thailand.
