Leaders of Japan and the United Nations agreed Monday that the United Nations should play a more active role in the reconstruction of Iraq.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi met with visiting UN Secretary General Kofi Annan late Monday.

"We shared the view that it was important the United Nations will be more actively engaged in the reconstruction of Iraq," Koizumi told reporters after the meeting.

Annan said he told Koizumi that the United Nations "has alwaysbeen ready to play its role and shared with him the plans we have for doing that on the condition that security will not be an impediment."

Annan arrived Japan Saturday for a five-day visit. This is his first travel to Tokyo since January, 2002, for an international meeting on assisting war-torn Afghanistan.

Earlier Monday, he also met Japanese Emperor Akihito, during which they discussed Iraq's reconstruction.

At Sunday's talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi, they reached the same common ground about UN's role in rebuilding Iraq.

Kawaguchi mentioned the reform of the United Nations, asking for Japan's bigger say but stopping short of bringing up calls forJapan's permanent seat in the UN Security Council.

Annan is scheduled to deliver a speech to Japanese lawmakers Tuesday.
