UN chief arrives in Tokyo for 5-day visit

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived here Saturday afternoon, kicking off a five-day visit to Japan which is focused on Iraq's reconstruction and UN reform.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived here Saturday afternoon, kicking off a five-day visit to Japan which is focused on Iraq's reconstruction and UN reform.

Annan is scheduled to meet Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi on Sunday and Emperor Akihito and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi Monday.

He will also deliver a speech to Japanese lawmakers on Tuesday.

The talks are expected to cover the UN role in Iraq's reconstruction and Japan's aid to Iraq.

They would also discuss reform of the world body. Japan has been trying to gain a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. The current permanent members are Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
