In view of the recent increase in the number of dengue fever cases in Indonesia, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government on Friday called on the public, particularly the travelers, to guard against the disease.

A spokesman for the Health Department said the best way to prevent dengue fever was to avoid mosquito bites as the dengue virus was transmitted through mosquito bites and there was no effective vaccine against it.

The spokesman said that anyone feeling unwell after returning from a trip should consult a doctor as soon as possible and provide details of their travel to the doctor.

He said the six dengue fever cases confirmed so far this year in Hong Kong were all imported cases.

Dengue fever has spread to 16 Indonesian provinces as the national death toll rose to 191 as of Friday morning.
