Hong Kong media reshipped Friday late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping's remarks on "One Country, Two systems" released by Xinhua Thursday and called for grasping the essential of Deng's words to conduct constitutional development in Hong Kong.
Wen Wei Po commented that the two most important contents of Deng's remarks are that concerning "One Country, Two Systems" and the administration of Hong Kong by the people of Hong Kong. Deng said in 1984, when he met with a Hong Kong industrial and commercial delegation and with Sze-yuen Chung and other prominent Hong Kong figures, that it must be required that "patriots form the main body of administrators," and "a patriot is one who respects the Chinese nation, sincerely supports the motherland's resumption of the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong and wishes not to impair Hong Kong's prosperity and stability."
The paper said we must grasp clearly the principle of "One Country, Two Systems" to conduct Hong Kong constitutional development.
Takungpao Daily said that Deng's remarks in 1984 were highly received by the Hong Kong public and confident on Hong Kong's future. Now 20 years has past, the Central Government's policy on Hong Kong has not ever changed. The Central Government has been stuck to its principles on Hong Kong and no people are allowed to disturb the settled policy. Any plans to undermine the "One Country, Two Systems" policy will not come through.
In an article entitled "Why It's Important to Recall Deng's Speech", China Daily said that the republication of Deng's words is by no means coincidental. It aims to point out certain confusions and misconceptions in the recent debate on constitutional development in Hong Kong and clarify them at the level of principle.
Regarding to the current debate on constitutional reform in Hong Kong, China Daily said that putting forth arguments does not mean putting accusing labels on others. The aim of debating is to differentiate between right and wrong and to prevent Hong Kong's development from deviating from its right course. `
