Party official brought to court on corruption charges in Hunan

Peng Jinyong, former secretary of the Changde City Committee for Discipline Inspection of the CPC inHunan Province, appeared in court Wednesday on charges of corruption.

Peng Jinyong, former secretary of the Changde City Committee for Discipline Inspection of the CPC inHunan Province, appeared in court Wednesday on charges of corruption.

Peng had also been head of the Party discipline inspection committee in the city for 15 years.

Peng was brought to the No. 1 Intermediate People's Court in Yueyang City, Hunan, on charges involving taking bribes, embezzlement and failure to account for his personal wealth.

Local people's procuratorates allege that from 1998 to February 2003, Peng accepted various currencies and gifts on 18 occasions to a total value of 615,580 yuan (75,000 US dollars) in connectionwith public bidding programs, official recruitment investigations and investment projects.

Meanwhile, he acquired 155,000 yuan (19,000 US dollars) by deception, making fake account bills and embezzlement.

Police found 4.6 million yuan (561,000 US dollars) when Peng was detained on April 28, 2003. During his tenure, Peng is allegedto have acquired more than 770,000 yuan (94,000 US dollars) through corruption. He refused to reveal the sources of about 1.1 million yuan (134,000 US dollars) in his possession.

The court will pass judgment at a later date.

Born in 1946 in Changde, Peng became a member of the standing committee of Changde City Committee of the CPC in 1995 and deputy secretary in 2001. His became secretary of the City Committee for Discipline Inspection of the CPC in 1995.

He was elected chairman of the Changde city committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in January 2003, and was investigated later that month.
