The situation of China's mining cities has been clarified for the first time. Research report shows China now has 178 mining cities, more than one fourth out of the total number of cities in the country, among which 10 percent are tending to face with exhaustion of resources and are in dire need of transformation.
More than 30 experts from such fields as energy resources and geology, after one-year-long investigation and research, outlined for the first time the division of these cities: 85 in east, 58 in central and 35 in west China.
Among the 178 cities, 29 have been engaged in the mining industry for less than 20 years in an infant period; 131 cities have seen a history of 20 to 50 years in the middle age; 18 cities are now aging with a history of over 50 years.
What is notable is that 10 percent of the 178 cities, such as Fuxin of Liaoning Province and Baiyin of Gansu Province, are beginning to face with exhaustion of resources. These cities are facing a series of problems such as economic downturn, environmental deterioration and are in urgent need of transformation.
