1,000 people stage anti-war meeting in Sydney

About 1,000 people participated in a meeting in Australia's largest city of Sydney Sunday to mark the anniversary of global protests against the war in Iraq.

About 1,000 people participated in a meeting in Australia's largest city of Sydney Sunday to mark the anniversary of global protests against the war in Iraq.

Millions of people in over 600 cities across the world staged anti-war protests one year ago to oppose the US-led invasion of Iraq. Half a million protestors took to the streets in Sydney at that time.

The Australian Associated Press quoted meeting organizer Pip Hinman as saying the continuing resistance to the occupation of Iraq and the growing scandal over the government's lies about weapons of mass destruction intelligence is quelling a reinvigoration of the anti-war movement.

"There's been a huge response to this meeting which is indicative that people are still so very concerned about the war which is ongoing in Iraq and which is based on a lie," she said.

An international day of action is scheduled on March 20 to markthe anniversary of the start of the US-led invasion of Iraq. A mass rally has been planned for Sydney's Hyde Park at midday.
