400 million copies of Chinese-character dictionary
The Xinhua Dictionary, a Chinese-character dictionary well-known to most Chinese people, saw its 400-millionth copy roll off the press when its tenth edition was published at the beginning of 2004.
The Xinhua Dictionary, a Chinese-character dictionary well-known to most Chinese people, saw its 400-millionth copy roll off the press when its tenth edition was published at the beginning of 2004.
The dictionary, which has influenced several generations of Chinese people since its first publication in 1953, is the first standard dictionary on simplified Chinese characters in modern times.
The dictionary, having had about two hundred printing runs, is now the reference book boasting the most copies in the world. It was edited for the tenth time by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Commercial Press.
