Japanese PM: I'll Continue to Visit Yasukuni Shrine
Junichiro Koizumi said he will continue to visit Tokyo's Yasukuni shrine, which honors 14 Class-A World War II criminals along with some two and a half million Japanese casualties of war.
Junichiro Koizumi said he will continue to visit Tokyo's Yasukuni shrine, which honors 14 Class-A World War II criminals along with some two and a half million Japanese casualties of war.
Koizumi made the remarks on Tuesday when facing criticism from Japanese opposition parties to his four visits to the controversial shrine since he came to power in 2001.
Koizumi said he hasn't any feeling of repugnance to his visits to the shrine, and he does not intend to change his mind.
Koizumi's remarks have incurred immediate and strong criticism from opposition parties.
Observers say in view of how Asian countries including China and South Korea have always strongly protested Japanese prime ministers paying visits to the shrine, Koizumi's remarks will undoubtedly bring a negative impact to the upcoming second round of six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear issue.
