US$965 million soccer lottery sold in 2003

China sold 7.914 billion yuan's (965 million US dollars) worth of soccer lottery tickets in the year 2003, about 848 million yuan (103 million dollars) more than that in 2002, a top lottery official said here Tuesday.

China sold 7.914 billion yuan's (965 million US dollars) worth of soccer lottery tickets in the year 2003, about 848 million yuan (103 million dollars) more than that in 2002, a top lottery official said here Tuesday.

Zhang Hao, director of China's Sports Lottery Administration, told a press conference that with the support of the Chinese government and soccer fans, the soccer lottery developed rapidly last year, and 23 people or groups were rewarded the ceiling prizeof 5 million yuan (about 600,000 dollars).

In 2003, matches from the Italian Serie A, English premier league, German first division league, French first division leagueand qualifiers of European soccer championships had been selected for the lottery, Zhang said.

"In 2004, we decided to launch a new-type soccer lottery, namely, goal-betting lottery in a bid to please our supporters and further develop the sports lottery in China," he added.

The win-tie-loss lottery and the goal-betting lottery tickets will be sold in parallel way every week and the outcome of both will come out on every Monday, he said.

All the revenue of the lottery had been used to improve people's health, develop the country's sports and upgrade the education facilities in poor areas, he said.
