Japan would ease ban on US poultry products if the avian flu found there is less virulent than that in Asia, a top Japanese official said Tuesday.
"We would consider limiting the import ban to poultry from Delaware if it is confirmed to be a less virulent type," Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Yoshiyuki Kamei said.
Japan slapped Saturday a suspension on all US poultry imports immediately after bird flu was confirmed the same day at a farm inthe Delaware State. But state secretary of Agriculture Michael Scuse stressed what had been found proved to be the H7 virus, which, unlike the H5N1 virus in some Asian countries, imposes no harm to human beings.
Japan has previously stopped beef imports from the Unites States due to the finding of mad cow disease. The move has forced many leading fast food restaurants to halt popular beef dish supply due to their heavy dependence on US beef imports.
US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick is scheduled to talk with Japanese officials Wednesday in Tokyo about, among other things, the beef and poultry problems.
