Sri Lanka's parliament was dissolved with effect from midnight on Feb. 7, officials said.

Fresh elections are to take place on Apr. 2 to elect a new 225-member assembly.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga's action came three months after she took over three key ministries of the incumbent Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Nov. 4 last year.

The election, the third since October 2000, comes four years ahead of the schedule.

The government printer Neville Nanayakkara said the relevant gazette notification announcing the dissolution of the assembly was received in the office late Saturday night.
