The lunch menu for Shanghai Vice-mayor Yang Xiaodu on Thursday was chicken braised in brown sauce, chicken soup and fried eggs, a message to local residents that it is safe to eat chicken and egg so long as they are cooked properly and pass quarantine checks.

The vice-mayor, in charge of medical and public health matters in Shanghai, had his lunch at a restaurant named Shanghai People. Before he sat down for the meal, he asked the restaurant owner about the place of production of the frozen chicken used in the restaurant, and whether it had passed quarantine inspection.

The volumes of chicken and eggs dropped in Shanghai after suspected bird flu cases were reported in the municipality.

Han Zheng, mayor of Shanghai, Thursday inspected a chicken farmin the rural part of Shanghai, which is about 2 km from another farm where 5,000 chickens were slaughtered five days ago to prevent possible spread of the bird flu.
